It seems that vegans have an advantage over vegetarians in Seoul. One might argue that vegetarians can visit restaurants that also serve meat-eaters. However, it is essential to remember that many dishes often contain fish or chicken bouillon, making them unsuitable for vegetarians. Although vegetarians can opt for vegan dishes, eventually they may crave Bibimbap and Kimbap with eggs. As a result, vegetarians yearning for dairy products, eggs, and honey wander the streets of Seoul.
Given the limited vegetarian choices in Seoul, I recommend the following vegan establishments. Maru Jayeonsik Kimbap in Insa-dong is quickly becoming one of my favorite dining spots. It offers cheap local dishes in a vegan format, eliminating concerns about chicken broths and fish sauces.
Another recommendation is Mahina Vegan Table, located in Gangnam-gu. Amidst luxury shopping, you can pause for a quick bite in one of Seoul’s most upscale neighborhoods. This fine dining vegan restaurant uses high-quality ingredients, and the presentation is impeccable. The service is outstanding, and the atmosphere is serene and soothing.
ALT.A in Itaewon boasts a diverse selection of Korean Chinese vegan dishes, some of which are presented quite artistically. Just a few doors down, you will find Plant Café & Kitchen, which offers an extensive international vegan menu.
I am still exploring Seoul to find a vegetarian (rather than vegan) restaurant that serves Korean-style dishes. Stay tuned.
