Welcome HOME TO THE ALPS: COEUR DES ALPES, ZERMATT

WRITTEN BY DAVID SERKIN

There are hotels you visit for convenience, but only a few are the reason for the journey. Coeur des Alpes, is the perfect example of a ‘boutique’ hotel that has countless unique features, and is fortunate to be in the best place for ski/board/and mountaineering in the Alps: Zermatt.

From the moment you arrive, the experience is distinct. A tunnel carved into the mountain guides you like James Bond to a glass lift that ascends into the hotel through the rock itself. As you glide upward, the hotel reveals its first surprise: a circular spa pool looking up to a glass ceiling that serves as the floor to the lounge room above. Arriving, the lift doors open to the heart of the hotel–a sunken lounge with a central 360-degree fireplace at its center. You step down and marvel that underfoot you see the beautiful pool below.

The reception desk is discreet—more a welcoming table than a formal counter. The greeting is warm and personal. You never feel processed; you feel welcomed.

Guests can gather around the fireplace on the glass floor and relax in the built-in sofas with pillows and small tables for a tea, an apéritif, or a glass of wine. Suspended above the pool in a setting that feels both architectural and yet, completely warm and secure.

Step out onto the terrace and the view commands attention: the iconic peak of the Matterhorn rising sharply against the sky. On clear days, its presence is magnetic. From the outdoor jacuzzi, steam curling into crisp, alpine air, the perspective is nothing short of cinematic.

Beyond the lounge, the hotel unfolds into a layered wellness sanctuary. A staircase descends to a spa carved against exposed mountain rock, displayed behind glass like a natural installation. The circular heated pool—the one visible from the lounge above—anchors a comprehensive wellness area that includes a hammam, caldarium, bio sauna, Arven sauna, infrared cabin, Kneipp pool, and a dream shower. It is a space designed not simply for relaxation, but for restoration.

The standard rooms reflect the same thoughtful design language. Even the classic singles and doubles feel consider-ed and refined, while some suites feature fireplaces, and all suites have expanded living areas.

The Loft rooms, however, are exceptional and utterly unique. A custom elevator that moves diagonally up an enclosed slope taking you to the Loft floors. Each Loft is entered by a small staircase within leading you to a sitting room with a slanted ceiling (serving as a massive sky-light) that slides open mechanically at the touch of a button.  This sitting room quite literally opens to the alpine sky. A metal bathtub, an elevated sleeping platform, kitchen, and dining table area encircle the top of the staircase.  And even more details are one-of-a-kind: bespoke chandeliers crafted from reclaimed ski-lift metal that create a dialogue between modern sophistication and mountain heritage. Wood dominates the palette throughout—warm, tactile, and contemporary—evoking the sensation of a New York loft reimagined for a pristine, alpine experience.

The crowning jewel, and the largest loft is called ‘Sky Loft’. Three double bedrooms, each with its own en-suite shower and WC, underlining a sense of thoughtful residential design rather than a conventional hotel room layout. A generous lounge area and fireplace makes it feel like a private home in the sky rather than a standard hotel suite.

The loft layout creates a sense of height and openness under rooflines and a private balcony with its own view of the Matterhorn.

Owned and run by the Thomas and Leni Müller-Jens family, the hotel carries the unmistakable imprint of personal care. Attention to detail is instinctive rather than procedural. Requests are handled with warmth, not formality. There is a palpable sense that you are being welcomed into a home shaped by pride and passion—not managed by a brand.

Their vision was to create something intimate, architectural, and highly personal. And did they ever succeed in creating something original!

The architectural dimension of the hotel bears the unmistakable signature of Heinz Julen, Leni’s brother and one of Zermatt most distinctive creative figures. Julen is not merely an architect; he is an artist-builder whose work has reshaped the aesthetic language of the resort. His approach resists compart-mentalization—both spatially and conceptually. Staying at Coeur Des Alpes you feel the history, personalize the family, and feel like you are witnessing their story, and the very history of Zermatt.

The hotel’s strong identity – blending modern design with natural rock, wood, and wellness spaces – reflects a very hands-on ownership philosophy typical of small, Swiss family establishments. Nothing in this hotel is massive or impersonal, just a home away from home, and yet, never feeling crowded.

Sustainability here is not presented as a checklist but as a way of life, quiet, integrated, almost instinctive. In Zermatt, the absence of cars reshapes the experience of arrival itself. The village breathes differently. Footsteps replace engines, and the soft hum of electric taxis moves through streets untouched by diesel or haste.

At Cœur des Alpes, this philosophy continues at the table, where ingredients are sourced locally and seasons guide the menu, grounding each meal in the surrounding landscape. Beyond the hotel walls, the commitment extends to heritage. The Julen family, long rooted in the region, have played a meaningful role in preserving the Valais Blacknose sheep, an emblem of alpine biodiversity and cultural continuity.

In the end, what defines Cœur des Alpes is not only its design or its sense of intimacy, but the way it mirrors the rhythm of the mountains themselves, deliberate, respectful, enduring. You arrive as a guest, and you leave with the rare feeling of having briefly belonged, not just to a hotel, but to a place that understands the true meaning of home.
